asbestos handling

Type I Survey

The purpose of the survey is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) in the building and assess their condition. This survey does not allow for sampling. All materials, which are presumed to contain asbestos, will be assessed.

Type II Survey

Sampling survey (Standard sampling, identification and assessment). The purpose and procedures used in this survey are the same as for Type I, except that representative samples are collected and analysed within a UKAS credited laboratory. If the material sampled is found to contain asbestos, other similar homogeneous materials used in the same way in the building can be strongly presumed to contain asbestos. A photographic record and material report will be produced and this can be used as the basis for the asbestos management within your property.

Type III Survey

This survey is required prior to demolition/major refurbishment. It is a full access sampling and identification survey used to locate and describe, as far as reasonably practicable, all ACMs in the building and may involve destructive inspection, as necessary, to gain access to all areas, including those that may be difficult to reach. This survey is designed to be used as a basis for tendering the removal of ACMs from the building prior to demolition or major refurbishment, so the survey does not access the condition of the asbestos. A photographic record and material report will be produced and this can be used as the basis for the asbestos management within your property.

Asbestos Management plan. Your survey forms the basis of your register. For each asbestos item located the risk of disturbance must be established. From the risk assessment your management policy must be prepared including responsibilities and procedures.

Site Management. The Register is your management tool. You must monitor its use and ensure the register is updated and the condition of asbestos containing materials reviewed.

Asbestos awareness training. It is a requirement under The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 that “Asbestos Awareness Training is given to all employees whose work could foreseeably expose them to asbestos. In particular, it should be given to all demolition workers and those workers in the refurbishment and allied trades where it is foreseeable that their work will disturb the fabric of the building”.
